Graham Hurst passed away peacefully on March 5, 2025, at the age of 65 in Cambridge, Ontario. Graham obtained a PhD in theoretical chemistry from Churchill College (1982-85) on a Commonwealth Scholarship. He pursued a post doctorate at IBM in Kingston, New York, followed by a long and successful career at Hypercube and Sybase (now SAP), in Cambridge, Ontario, retiring in 2018.

His love of problem-solving extended far beyond academia. Whether tackling complex research or patiently teaching mathematics to his sons, he had a rare ability to make the abstract understandable. Graham’s true brilliance, however, lay in his generosity. If someone had a problem, he would go out of his way to help, expecting nothing in return. He believed in people, never held grudges and approached life with a steady, pragmatic optimism. The signature mantra given to him by one beneficiary of this optimism, “Keep Calm and Graham On,” perfectly captures his approach to both challenges and triumphs.

Born in Toronto, Graham had a great love of fishing and campfires at the family summer cottage and was an avid skier. His winter weekends were happily spent on the slopes with his family and friends. Graham leaves behind his beloved wife Judy Eileen Hurst (Keenan), sons Jeremy and Derek (Chloe) and grandson Angus. He will be deeply missed, but his impact, through his intellect, kindness and steady hand, will be ever present for his family and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
