Contemporaries of John Croucher (U82, Natural Sciences) will be saddened to hear of his death in May 2025.

John cut rather a striking figure on arrival at Churchill, standing head and shoulders above most of us and invariably sporting his trademark Dr Marten boots. Amongst his other interests, he was a keen rower and stalwart DJ of Pavilion ‘Pleasure Machine’ discos, where his 6’5” stature proved indispensable for manoeuvring that 1980s essential, the ceiling glitter ball.

Most of his adult life John lived in London, working as a technical specialist in banking. A few years ago, he retired to rural Somerset and set about gardening with a passion, having never lost his love of the natural world. He also hugely enjoyed travel and sport – especially softball in later years where he was embraced by its community, and horse racing with good friends. John’s warm presence and good humour will be much missed by family and friends, many of whom gathered to share happy memories at a ceremony in his beloved New Forest.
