Student Support Fund

Supporting the minds of the future

Making sure that the best and brightest can come to Churchill to study, irrespective of background or the ability to pay is only possible with the help of student support.

Churchill has one of the highest proportions of undergraduate entrants from the state sector amongst Oxbridge colleges. Over 100 Churchill undergraduates currently receive a Cambridge bursary, the majority receiving a full bursary of £3,500 per year. Hardship bursaries are also awarded to both undergraduates and graduates where unexpected and urgent financial need has suddenly emerged.

We have historically excelled as a College around the provision of student bursaries, thanks to the generosity of alumni and friends of the College. It is vital that the College continues to have at its disposal the funds to help those in genuine financial need. We invite you to lend your support and help ensure that the best young minds, from all backgrounds are encouraged to apply to Churchill and can thrive here.

We interviewed a range of students who have received different bursaries and studentships — from core entry bursaries that enabled them to take up their places to small grants that helped them reach their potential, to let them tell their story.

43% of students received some form of financial support from the College last year. We hope these stories shed some insight on a tiny proportion of the lives touched by this vital financial resource at Churchill.

You may have heard about the University Harding Challenge Fund for Student Support. Now in its second year, this fund will match donations pound for pound from new donors, or those who have not given since 31 July 2018, which are given to any College student support initiative (which includes bursaries, studentships, mental health and sports and societies) and contribute the equivalent amount, up to £100,000 into a central fund for undergraduate student support. Churchill is set to benefit significantly from this fund as we are a College with a large number of undergraduates in receipt of bursary funding. New donors are defined as those who have not made a donation to the College since graduating.

The matching funds have been generously donated by David and Claudia Harding, David is an alumnus of St Catharine’s.
