Matthew H. Kramer was born in Massachusetts and educated at Cornell (BA), Harvard (JD), and Cambridge (PhD and LLD). He has advanced degrees in both Philosophy and Law. His twenty books and four co-edited books range over many areas of legal, political, and moral philosophy. His most recently published book is Legal Rights and Moral Rights (CUP, 2025). His work has recently been celebrated in a lengthy festschrift, under the title Without Trimmings: The Legal, Political, and Moral Philosophy of Matthew Kramer (OUP, 2022). At the undergraduate level, he lectures and supervises in Jurisprudence; he also teaches Topics in Legal & Political Philosophy in the postgraduate LLM program. He directed studies in Law at Churchill from 1995 to 2012. He was a Visiting Professor at Hebrew University of Jerusalem in April 2009, and a Visiting Professor at Tel Aviv University in March 2012. He is in his twenty-third year as Professor of Legal and Political Philosophy within Cambridge University and in his thirty-first year as a Fellow of Churchill. He was elected a Fellow of the British Academy in 2014.
