It has been a difficult year for us all, but news of great work undertaken by members of our community is uplifting. This includes those who are continuing to respond to the coronavirus pandemic, and those working in many other fields. Here’s what has been happening in the last few days.

Fellow and linguist, Dr Theresa Biberauer, won the Small Group Teaching (Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences) prize at the Cambridge SU Student-Led Teaching Awards.

PhD student Marco Caballero won a CAPA 2021 prize from the Department of Engineering for his project ‘Self-configuring networks in high-mobility environments’.

Emeritus Fellow, Professor Krishna Chatterjee, is leading a new clinical trial for a third ‘booster’ Covid-19 vaccine. It will be the first study in the world to provide vital data on the impact of a third dose on patients’ immune responses.

Honorary Fellow and Alumna Dr Helen Czerski, alongside alumna Professor Catherine Green, was a guest at the series finale of The Great British Menu, where a banquet was held to celebrate British innovation and invention.

Fellow and Immunologist, Professor Adrian Liston, has been elected as a new Fellow to The Academy of Medical Sciences.

New research by Past Fellow, Dr Stephen O’Rahilly (1992 – 2006), has found that one in every 340 people might carry a mutation in a single gene that makes them more likely to have a greater weight from early childhood.

Statistician Professor Sir David Spiegelhalter co-wrote an article for The Guardian called ‘With Covid, averages are not the only story’, which discusses the need to look at local data.

Fellow and social psychologist Dr Sander van der Linden commented on social media platforms labelling scientific content as misinformation and what this might mean for public perception of information in the scientific domain.
