Professor Andrew Palmer FRS, FREng, Emeritus Fellow and a leading authority on the mechanics of solids, died on 20 December 2019.
Andrew Palmer first joined the College in 1967, serving as a Teaching Fellow for eight years. He then moved into industry, as a consultant engineer specialising in pipeline technology, in particular in the Arctic. In 1985 he went to found his own company, Andrew Palmer and Associates, working worldwide in the field of marine pipelines. In 1996 he returned to Cambridge as Jafar Research Professor of Petroleum Engineering, and was elected first to a Title E Fellowship (1996–2001) and then to a Professorial Fellowship (2001–2005). Upon his retirement from the University in 2005, the College elected him an Emeritus Fellow in recognition of his contribution at different levels over a long period. Following retirement from Cambridge he continued to pursue his academic interests, with a Chair at the National University of Singapore.
