The following prizes are awarded for academic excellence following exam results.
Undergraduate Prizes
Undergraduate Scholarship prizes
Undergraduate Scholarship prizes are awarded to those who obtain Firsts. The current value of a scholarship is £120. In addition, a scholar is entitled to occupy a room for four nights during vacations and is invited to the Scholars’ Feast. Prizes are also are awarded to students who obtain a 2.1 which falls within the top 25% of results in their Tripos. The current value of a prize is £60.
Edwyn Charles Hart Memorial Prize — £175
The College has accepted a small bequest to endow an undergraduate prize to be awarded `from time to time for outstanding work’. This prize is awarded to the undergraduate in his/her final year who, regardless of subject, is judged to have been the top performer in the College.
The Beatrice Blore-Browne Prize — £200
For the best academic performance in the Tripos by an undergraduate who has rowed or coxed in the first or second men’s or women’s boats in May Bumps that year.
The Liz Neal Prize for Academic Progress – £150
For the undergraduate student who has made the greatest academic progress from first year to the end of their degree.
Arts, Humanities and Social Science Prizes
The Hart-Marshall Prize in the Arts & Humanities — £175
The College has accepted a gift to endow an undergraduate prize to be awarded `from time to time for outstanding performance in a Tripos in the Arts and Humanities’. This prize is awarded to the undergraduate in his/her final year who, regardless of subject, is judged to have been the top performer in the College.
The Hart-Marshall Prize for English — £125
The Director of Studies in English is asked to recommend the Churchill student who has performed outstandingly in any part of the English Tripos.
Classics Prize — £125
For the Churchill undergraduate who has made the most outstanding contribution in Classics in the preceding 12 months. Nominated by the student’s Director of Studies.
The Alton & Eunice Kramer Prize for Law — £125
For the Churchill undergraduate specialising in Law who has achieved the best performance in Part 1A of the Law Tripos. Nominated by the student’s Director of Studies.
Roy Porter Prizes in History — two prizes of £250
A prize for the undergraduate with the best performance in the Part I of the History Tripos and a prize for the undergraduate with the best performance in Part II of the History Tripos.
Mitsuharu Hara Prize for Economics — £500
For the Churchill undergraduate specialising in Economics who has achieved the best performance in a University examination in Economics. The recipient must have obtained a First and have achieved the highest relative ranking among all Churchill students taking any part of the Economics Tripos in that year. Nominated by the student’s Director of Studies.
Philip P. Turner Prize in Economics – £500
From 2025, this annual prize of £500 will be awarded by the College to the students who excel academically in gaining a first-class degree in the subject, and with preference for those who may be from backgrounds where their families didn’t have previous University experience. Students are nominated by their Director of Studies.
STEM Prizes
Bill Brown Prize for Engineering — 4 Prizes of £250
One student in each year who is judged to have been the top performer in their particular year. Nominated by the students’ Directors of Studies.
Hawthorne Prize for Engineering — £75
For the Churchill undergraduate who has made the most outstanding contribution in Engineering in the preceding twelve months. Nominated by the student’s Director of Studies.
Alec Broers Prize for Computing Science — £100
Endowed by alumni, in honour of the former Master, Lord Broers for the student in Part II who has been the top performer in the tripos. Nominated by the student’s Director of Studies.
Bullard Prize for Physics/Earth Sciences — 3 Prizes of £400
For students who achieved the best performances in:
- Physics in Part II of the Natural Sciences Tripos
- Physics in Part IB of the Natural Sciences Tripos
- Geological Sciences in Part II of the Natural Sciences Tripos.
Nominated by the students’ Directors of Studies.
Sir Peter and Lady Gershon Prize in Mathematics — £500
A prize for the College student who achieves the overall best performance in Mathematics in Tripos exams, including Part III.
The Christine and Hermann Bondi Prize for Mathematics — £250
For the Churchill undergraduates who made the best contribution to the standing of the College in Mathematics in the previous 12 months in Parts IB and Part II of the Mathematics Tripos. Nominated by the students’ Directors of Studies.
Tout Tristram Prizes for Mathematics — up to two prizes of £50Â
The Directors of Studies in Mathematics may award prizes each year to any Churchill mathematician who comes top, in the University, in his or her Tripos.
The Bhagwati Prize for Biological Sciences — £350
For the Churchill undergraduate (other than a medical or veterinary student) who has performed outstandingly well in one of the biological subjects in Part II of the Natural Sciences Tripos. Nominated by the student’s Director of Studies.
The Katritzky Prize for Chemistry — £400
For the Churchill undergraduate specialising in Chemistry who has achieved the best performance in Part II of the Natural Sciences Tripos. Nominated by the student’s Director of Studies.
Alex Hopkins Memorial Prize for Chemistry — £150
For the Churchill undergraduate with the best performance in Natural Sciences Tripos Part III Chemistry, on condition that the student is placed in the First Class. Nominated by the student’s Director of Studies. Alex Hopkins was an Undergraduate, Advanced Student and Teaching Fellow in Chemistry at Churchill College who died tragically young in 2006. The Alex Hopkins fund in his memory was established by his family and friends to support chemistry in Churchill.
The Anthony and Christina Kelly Prize in Materials Science — £300
For the Churchill undergraduate who achieved the best overall performance in Part 1A or Part 1B of the Natural Sciences Tripos, and whose papers for that examination included, as appropriate, either Materials Science in Part 1A or Part 1B. Nominated by the student’s Director of Studies.
Jon Rabone Prize in Computer Science — £300
A prize for the most meritorious performance for an undergraduate at Churchill College, as judged by the Tutors for Computer Science performance in the Computer Sciences Tripos exams for an undergraduate at Churchill College.
Medical and Veterinary Fund Prizes — £100 and £150
Nominated by the student’s Director of Studies:
- The MVST IA Prize for the Churchill student with the best performance in MVST Part IA, on condition that the student is placed in the First Class. (£100)
- The MVST IB Prize for the Churchill student with the best performance in MVST Part IB, on condition that the student is placed in the First Class. (£100)
- The MVST Third Year Prize for the Churchill student with the best performance in any Tripos examination taken in the third year, on condition that the student is placed in the First Class. (£150)
Any student who has been awarded a Distinction in one of the Final examinations at any time during the current academic year will be nominated by their Director of Studies (£100 per prize).
